Recently, the 4th International Congress on Earth and Geological Sciences was successfully held in Paris, France. Wang Nan, a doctoral student of the School of Energy and Mining Engineering, was invited to attend the congress and delivered a conference presentation entitled “Mechanisms of Surface Disturbance Induced by Coal Seam Mining Based on Primary Key Strata Analysis”.

The presentation focused on strata disturbance during coal seam mining. Based on the key stratum theory, it systematically analyzed the structural response of the overlying strata and the surface deformation characteristics induced by underground mining. The study established a methodology integrating theoretical modeling with multi-factor analysis and evaluation, providing solid theoretical support and technical reference for the efficient, safe and green mining of coal resources. Wang Nan systematically expounded the research background, theoretical model, disturbance mechanism and engineering application, fully demonstrating the university’s research strength and technological innovation capacity in mining engineering and geological disaster prevention and control, and attracting extensive attention and high praise from the participating experts and scholars.

During the congress, Wang Nan also held in-depth exchanges with experts and scholars from renowned universities and research institutions, including the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, the University of British Columbia in Canada, the University of Tübingen in Germany and AGH University of Krakow in Poland. They had extensive discussions on topical issues such as resource recovery and utilization, intelligent mine construction, the origin of volcanic rocks, geological disaster assessment and geochemical evolution, and actively explored the potential for international cooperation in resource and environmental protection, intelligent mining technology and geological modeling.

The congress was hosted by the International Union of Geological Sciences and featured multiple academic segments, including keynote presentations, thematic forums, oral presentations and poster sessions. It brought together experts and scholars in geoscience from many countries and regions around the world to conduct in-depth exchanges and discussions on frontier topics such as Earth system science, climate change, structural geology, mineral resources and sustainable mining, with the aim of promoting academic exchange and scientific and technological innovation in the global geoscience community. Wang Nan’s excellent performance at the congress not only demonstrated the solid research competence and strong international communication skills of the university’s graduate students, but also further enhanced the university’s academic influence in the field of international geoscience research.
